About EEG, NCV, And EMG Test

EMG Test

An EMG test is a medical examination that measures the activity and health of our body muscles. When our muscles are active, they produce an electric current, which is generally proportional to the level of muscle activity.

This test is used to record this electrical activity in muscles and hence, aims to gather information about the human muscular and nervous systems.

It is a way of finding causes of muscle weakness or paralysis, and various other muscle troubles such as twitching, numbness, pain, injury, or damage.

A doctor may prescribe an EMG Test for Neuropathy as well. Neuropathy is a term used to describe a problem with the nerves, very often the ‘Peripheral Nerves’ as opposed to the ‘Central Nervous System’.

EEG Test

EEG is a short form for electroencephalogram and is used to detect your brain activity and if there are any abnormalities present in the activity pattern. The test is very simple and is harmless. Being a non-invasive test it does not cause the patient any pain nor does it leave any scarring.

Brain cells communicate with each other in the form of impulses and the test records these brainwaves on a computer. The results from the EEG test look like wavy lines and having valleys and peaks, similar to a heartbeat pattern. The doctor can easily analyze these results and determine if there are any abnormalities present in the brain.

Most of the EEG tests take up to an hour to perform but those involving sleep analysis take more. The family members can stay with the patient if the doctor allows. Sometimes the patient may be required to sleep as little as possible the night before the test to get the best results.

This is generally done when the patient is required to sleep during the EEG. The doctor may also give the patient a sedative to help them to relax and sleep while the test is being performed.

NCV Test

An NCV Test or the Nerve Conduction Velocity Test is an electrical test that is prescribed to determine how fast signals move through peripheral nerves (nerves outside the brain and spinal cord which help control our muscles and experience vital senses).

In the case of healthy nerves, the electrical signals move through with greater strength and speed; whereas, in the case of damaged nerves, the process is comparatively weak and slower.

The NCV is also sometimes known as a Nerve Conduction Study Procedure and is helpful in the diagnosis of nerve damage or nerve dysfunction.

Symptoms of numbness, tingling, and/or burning sensations may prompt your physician to order a Nerve Conduction Velocity Test. The NCV test is usually performed to diagnose any nerve damage or dysfunction. This test allows the patient’s doctor to differentiate between a nerve injury and a nerve disorder.

Besides, this test can also be extremely helpful for the physician to single out between an injury to the nerve fiber and an injury to the myelin sheath (a covering that shields the nerve).

Are There Any Preparations Required Before The Tests?

Before taking an EMG, NCV, or EEG test, you will be asked by your doctor to take certain precautions. These may include not using any kind of body lotion for several hours before the examination and avoiding any kind of caffeine (tea, coffee, etc.) for three to four hours before the test.

If you are taking any medications, it advisable to disclose your medical history to your doctor before going in for the test.

However, make sure your normal body temperature is maintained, as low body temperature can slow down nerve conduction. If the weather is very cold, for example, you may be asked by your doctor to sit in a warm room for a few minutes before the test.

Other than that, there is no special preparation like fasting is required for adults. For infants and children, however, the physical and psychological preparation will depend upon the child’s age, behavior, and prior experience (if any).

Dress in comfortable clothes and avoid wearing jewelry, watches, or anything metallic that may interfere with the procedure.
